This book was fun to read! I liked Senna because I felt that she was a good balance of strengths and weaknesses, and she really grew over the course of the story. I also liked how detailed the magic was. Using plants and singing have both featured in magic systems a lot, but the author got really in-depth in developing this concept.

It was also cool seeing how many different things that the magic could do. It wasn’t too powerful, but it had a lot of flexibility, like when Senna turns into a seal. It also had offensive and defensive capabilities for the fight scenes.

The love story between Senna and Joshen was sweet. Instead of just a cliche falling for each other right away because he was her Guardian, they took their time to get to know each other, and the love grew out of friendship. I was sad whenever they were separated and happy when they reunited. I can see their love lasting a long time because it’s built on such a strong foundation of trust between them.

The only thing that was a little bit weird was the ending. I thought after she defeated Espen, the story would end. Instead, she found out that there was someone else behind the Dark Witch, but that reveal felt a little rushed and weak. I would have liked to have seen that part of the story fleshed out more. Everything else was so detailed, from descriptions to culture to the magic, that I was disappointed.

Still, I liked the story, and I want to read the next one in the series now!

Bonus: Witches
I love a good witch story, and this one did not disappoint. There’s both good witches, like Senna, and an evil witch, Espen. Both have their powers tied to nature in a very powerful way, with the ability to make plants grow, use plants in spells, and even control the weather. Also, I’ve seen magic systems that used songs before, but the way this story used it was very well-integrated and thought out without being too complicated.
