Impossible world. Impossible dragon. Impossible adventure.
Lost with her ship and crew in an unfamiliar land, Min’s first command could be her last.
Nothing here behaves the way it should:
The magic that powers her skyship has been drained, rendering it immobile.
The sky is an endless twilight, lit by the luminous fish that swim in it.
Off starboard, there’s also the country-sized dragon that is looking particularly hungry.
It will take all of Min’s training and experience to get her people safely back home, but as the truth about the Darkstar Dimension begins to be revealed, Min will have to prove to her crew – and to herself – that she is still the best person for the job.

Something new from Benedict Patrick, the author of the Yarnsworld novels. This time he wrote something a little different: a portal fantasy full of adventure. From the moment the book starts, you’re wrapped up in the action as Min finds herself plummeting through the sky with no memory of how she got there. Fortunately, she has her crew and their ship, the Melodious Narwhal, to help her navigate this new world.
The exciting thing about portal fantasy is that you never know where you’re going to end up, and this story doesn’t disappoint. There are fantastic worlds to explore, each one more bizarre than the last, with their own rules and mysterious creatures. I couldn’t put this book down because I always wanted to see what Min would find next.
I don’t want to give too much away so I will just say that I highly recommend this book. I love the Yarnsworld series but this is probably the best novel that Benedict Patrick has written yet. There are so many surprises to discover and it hints at more to come. I can’t wait for the next book.
Great for fans of portal fantasy like The Magicians, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Deathgate Cycle. Also dragons, ships (airships and sailing ships!), and strange magical creatures.
