F/F Couples That Are Goals
I love reading and writing books with F/F couples. Most YA books focus on M/F romance so it’s rare to find queer girls. Even when two girls fall in love, that relationship often ends tragically. The trope of queer romance ending in one or both characters’ death is so common that it’s called Bury Your Gays. (BRB, I’m still crying over Willow+Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was a big deal when I was a baby queer.)
But sometimes these girls get the happily ever after they deserve, and since Valentine’s Day is a happy holiday, I want to focus on those stories for this post. So here are the F/F couples whose wonderful relationships give us joy!
Jack and Alexis
From the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. After she and her twin sister Jill stumbled through a doorway to another world called the Moors, Jack begins studying as an apprentice to the mad scientist and she meets Alexis in the nearby village. Alexis goes above and beyond to help Jack overcome her fears of touching another person (since she has a need to be clean) and helps her in many ways during Jack’s adventures. They’re torn apart for a while during the events of the books, but in the end, they’re happily reunited–thanks in part to Jack’s scientific skills.

Amelia and Willow (and Natalie)
From the Ember Academy for Young Witches series by L. C. Mawson. Amelia undergoes constant challenges at Ember Academy, but Willow is always there to help her. Their relationship helps keep Amelia grounded while she faces many changes in her life. At the same time, she’s also attracted to Natalie, but they stay at arms-length for most of the series. Later on, all three girls reach an understanding and create a family that fits their unique needs.

Meela and Lysi
From the Mermaids of Eriana Kwai series by Tiana Warner. Meela is training to kill the deadly mermaids which threaten her home island, Eriana Kwai, but she’s secretly in love with one, Lysi. The two girls have to overcome prejudices and conflicts between humans and mermaids to be together, but they help bring peace to their people through the strength of their love.

Ylva and Ryoko
From the Afterlife Academy: Valkyrie series by Arizona Tape. At the Afterlife Academy, each magical race is expected to keep to their own kind, but Ylva ends up with a Dragon roommate: Ryoko. Ylva is training to become a Valkyrie and Ryoko is a Shinigami, so they clash from the beginning, but they have a slowburn romance that develops across the series.

Riwenne and Kyra
From my Divine Warriors series! I’ve written a lot of F/F couples across my various books, and I like all of them, even though some don’t get their happily ever after. But my favorite couple is Riwenne and Kyra because they believe in each other. The two of them have faced so many tragedies and overcome obstacles, yet they continue to love and support each other. Whether they will get their happy ending, well, that’s yet to be revealed.
